Problems associated with First Metatarsal Osteotomy Surgery

  • Infection there is a sudden increase in pain, swelling and temperature 2/100
  • Loss of correction or insufficient correction 5/100
  • Metal removal after healing 1/100
  • Early falls can cause loss of position
  • Pain in the longterm, may come from neighbouring joints, local nerve issues or the soft tissues 5/100

Post operative instructions

  • Dressing left intact for 2 weeks
  • Heel walking for the first 2 weeks

  • Begin full weight bearing on a “flat foot”
  • Begin physiotherapy
  • Review at further 4 weeks and x-ray
  • Driving at 6-8 weeks
Additional information

  • Healing time for an osteotomy can be up to 6 months
  • You will be required to wear a splint on your foot to help the toe heal for 3 months
  • You will be unable to wear normal shoes for up to 3 months
